Learning Rank and File Coordinates in Chess

When we watch or read about chess games we often hear people say how pieces are moved to A-1, C-3, E-5 and so on. These are chess board coordinates. They are important reference points to understand chess moves and positioning better. Here are some basic helps in the use of these coordinates.

Official chess boards have numbers at their right sides. These are called ranks. They number from 1 to 8 from bottom up. Each rank represents a row on the board. There are also letters found on the bottom sides of chess boards. These are called files from letter A to H, left to right. Ranks and files are chess board coordinates.

Coordinates are used as locators. When we say rank 5 and file F, we mean the intersection of row 5 and column F. The square on that intersection is what our coordinates or reference points are referring to. With this, referring to chess moves and positioning from beginning to end of the game becomes simpler.

For instance, as an opening move, we move the pawn on D-2 to D-4. With this coordinate we pinpoint what pawn on the board we are referring to and what specific square or space we want it placed on. So the enemy may decide to counter that move and make an opening move by placing enemy pawn D-7 to D-5. Now, we have two warring pawns face to face in front of two opposing queens. We may then decide to use an ally knight on B-1 and place it on C-3—in preparation for capturing enemy pawn on D-5. But the opponent reads this and so enemy pawn on C-7 is placed on C-6 to back up the pawn on D-5.

Now we see how moves and positioning are systematically documented or recorded through coordinates. Coordinates are very useful as we try to learn more winning strategies from chess literature in books or online. We can even trace our previous movements in a game if we recorded them using coordinates. Many players record their moves in chess to later reflect on how far they have improved in the game. It may be easy to retrieve the moves in online chess, but how about our land-based games? Hence, hand-written coordinates are useful.

Learning to interpret and use chess board coordinates helps a lot in tracking down and improving our chess skills. This is among the best skills honing strategies in the game.
